Rusalka was composed in 1900, the same year that Sigmund Freud’s ‘Traumdeutung’ came out. In this version of Rusalka, Dvorak’s fairytale is seen as just that: A dream of a young woman living in a time in which female sexuality was structurally suppressed, analysed on Freud’s sofa.
